Twenty for Tresham!

Traffic speeds through the village are a concern to us all. Gloucestershire County Council has launched a new Community 20s Scheme which is to introduce of 20mph speed limits where communities live and work and/or which are used by vulnerable road users such as children and older people.

Following on from the  recent Gloucestershire County Council consultation, Hillesley and Tresham Parish Council has registered an interest in the new Community 20’s scheme. Details can be found on this announcement and on noticeboards.

There are many good reasons for a speed 20 mph speed limit in Tresham NOW.

  • The single road running through the village is narrow.
  • The road has no pavement and in places there is nowhere to get out of the way.
  • There are several blind corners.
  • The road is poorly lit at night.
  • Social interaction and community spirit is impacted as walking through the village to visit neighbours is just dangerous.
  • The present speed limit hinders children from visiting their friends in the village.
  • Many houses have driveways that are blind as you exit.
  • Houses have been damaged by vehicles travelling too fast through the village.
  • Sooner or later someone is going to be seriously injured – there have been many near misses.
  • Traffic drives far too fast – there are often for example, skid marks on the road from near accidents.
  • The lane through Tresham is also often used as a rat run by people using the lane as a short cut.

Following on from the speed of traffic being raised at the last Parish Council meeting, a number of villagers have come together to try and get early consideration for this scheme in Tresham.  Hannah and Justin Bence have kindly said they will act as focal points for communication. If you have ideas you would like to share or would like to get actively involved in helping make this happen for Tresham, please let them know (Please switch on JavaScript to see our email address/via Whatsapp)

One of the key factors in this will be to clearly demonstrate the level of local support for a 20mph speed limit and so, as a first step we are organising a petition to hopefully gain everyone’s support which will then highlight the need for action by the County council and raise our profile for a future scheme. We will be visiting everyone to collect as many signatures as possible, in the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions, please do talk to one of us.

  1. Thank you all very much in the group for your active support of this idea.
I have heard that if much of the traffic is already at 20mph, there is a greater likelihood of it being formalised and made mandatory. So can we all try always to drive below 20mph (I know we probably do most of the time – I am trying to make that all the time in my case) even if roads seem clear, to set good examples, hold back the speedier vehicles (including fast cyclists) keep it safer for everyone especially children and dog walkers etc, and make it easier to demonstrate when monitored that 20 is already usually (but unfortunately not always) the maximum speed – because it so clearly needs to be that most people do it naturally.
